the governor is usually a caustic partisan critic of president obama, but this is not one of those days. one of the ways to watch the realtime storm response in new jersey's largest city today was to follow the amazing twitter feed of that city's mayor corey booker. this person tweets to mayor booker, transformer just went kaboom. the mayor tweets back. we'll alert the utility company. i'm five minutes from you and will do a drive by. nine minutes later, the mayor says, gratitude at river view with team helping get folks to shelter. thanks for the heads up. then somebody tweets to the mayor. mr. mayor, underpass still has many homeless underneath. . three minutes later, the mayor tweets back, i'll head down now to take a look with emergency personnel. then by 5:46, less than an hour later, thank you, just left. we were able to convince and transport 3 homeless brothers and sisters to shelter. there's a lot on the plate of a big city mayor on any day, but there's a lot to be done to respond to a storm of this magnitude too. sometimes that gets done personally by the mayor himself. joinin

president obama has showed leadership. governor romney, i don't think there was a natural disaster while he was head of the state. it is a teachable moment. it is one where once you land in new york, you see the city is a little empty and people are fairly desperate and the desperation is just going to start. our hearts and prayers are from people that live in harm's way and people that live through katrina know what it is. the political ramifications could show up on tuesday. >> is this a moment when as much as we are talking about the politics in short-tem electoral politics, is this a moment where we can get through a broader political conversation? >> it is not just that mitt romney would point fema back to the state but the very notion of inequality, of that 47%, that that is what is revealed in this moment. >> i think that's right. the feeling you have when you see what you just showed, which is someone through no fault of their own being dealt the worst tragedy that can befall a human being. when you look at people

you might think based on overall polls we see that will fit with governor romney. when the largest spanish newspaper in the country endorsed obama last week, they did it because of romney's economic pitch. why do they see it different than the rest of the country? >> this latest poll shows that 73% of latinos trust obama and the democrats to improve the economic situation. so the economy is the number one concern for latinos, and it has been for a long part of this campaign. they just do not buy the smaller government argument, and we know this from years of polling. latinos in general prefer a more active government, especially when it comes to health care, especially in terms of medicaid. so here latinos are not voting for the democrats for that one single issue for immigration. it's he economically driven like it is for the rest of lakt ra electorate. >> you talked about the battleground states. the president won the hispanic vote by about 2:1 in 2008. >> in florida its going to be really interesting to see bought of the diversity of the latino population there.
